In early 2001,
we successfully publicized and raised over $16,000 for
the medical treatment of journalist Tipu Sultan.
Sultan was investigating Feni crime boss and ex-Member
of Parliament, Joynal Hazari, and was almost killed by
Hazari’s paid thugs.
Tipu was
treated in a Bangkok hospital and has now
recovered and got back to his life.
News: Journalist Tipu Sultan wins prestigious award (November, 2002)
Update From Tipu (October 6, 2002)
The last surgery from Bangkok went
well. I am feeling a lot better now. I will visit New
York in middle of November. I hope to meet some of you
then.
Latest From Tipu Sultan (May
6, 2002)
I am living in Dhaka now. I am having
to take physiotherapy on a regular basis. Doctors have
said that I will need to continue it for another year.
Next August I will have to go to Bangkok again. I will
have a major surgery on my left hand. They are going
to remove bones from the waist and graft it inside my
left hand. They will also graft some skins in the hand
where new flesh did not grow. After a few months of
the surgery, I will again have another surgery where
they will remove the steel plate and screw from the
my hand. I couldn't start work on a regular basis. I
have done some writing in weekly 2000. I sit at the
Prothom Alo office everyday from 11 to 3. I don't have
much to do. I just fix the press releases here and there.
Nothing specific there and its not a paid job either.
All the expenses for medical treatment in Dhaka now
is coming from the Prothom Alo fund. Please pray for
me. There is no progress to my law suits. The criminals
are walking freely. So I don't feel very safe either,
Sincerely, Tipu Sultan, Journalist.

The Appeal:
Tipu Sultan, a young and energetic, committed and courageous journalist from the
Eastern part of Bangladesh has been pushed into the limelight lately albeit with a truly tragic backdrop
! A Noakhali correspondent of UNB, a leading Bangladeshi News Agency, Tipu, with his investigative reporting has been instrumental in exposing the reign of terror and tyranny unleashed upon the peace-loving citizens by a mischievous local lawmaker
belonging to the party in power. In doing so he had no doubt upheld the high moral ground of brave and honest journalism but unfortunately not without a
very dear personal price. He was attacked, assaulted and brutally beaten up by the vindictive and wrathful cohorts of the aforementioned political thug
and is now fighting for his life in a Dhaka Hospital.
Doctors have already exhausted all their means and know-how and declared that nothing further can be done locally to safeguard his hands and legs. The only recourse left now is to treat him abroad at the earliest in a specialized
Orthopedic Facility which by all means is an astronomically expensive exercise for an aspiring newsman like him. On the other hand all the appeals to the Government for help have fallen on the deaf ears so far, for obvious reasons of course, and it has washed its hands off just by offering a meager sum nowhere near the actual cost foreseen . Consequently Tipu's chance of survival and return to normal professional life now solely depends upon his
well-wishers, fellow citizens of Bangladesh, including us the Non Resident Bangladeshis, who can actually make a big difference just by donating a day's income. We therefore implore you in all earnestness to come forward with your contribution to the rescue of this dauntless soul who risked his life for the greater interest of our nation.
Please act fast as we are racing against time!
