Arsenic Project Campaign

Bangladesh is one of the richest countries in the world in rain and surface water per capita and yet it is one of the most unutilized of all resources. With ground water unreliable and over exploited, surface water preservation has become an urgent environmental need. And the failure to provide people with safe drinking water by the State becomes a violation of the basic right to life.

Bangladesh faces a grave impact of environmental disorder from over exploitation of ground water – the ground water pouring out of the millions of tubewells are highly arsenic contaminated. Tubewells are no more safe sources of water.

Brotee's Safe Water Program is the result of an urgent need of the village people who have lost all sources of safe drinking water due to the scourge of arsenic in tubewells.

In early September, Drishtipat started a month long 'Arsenic Project Campaign' to support Brotee's Safe water Program. The fundraising campaign officially ended last week. The goal was to raise fund for the Arsenic victims in West Shapania village. The fund collected has been a little more than what we targeted. Our original target was $3500 and we collected $3850. The collected money will be channeled to Brotee via Bangladesh Environment Network. Brotee already started mobilizing the village people to form Gono Gobeshona Dal. The money will be utilized for the pond preservation (safe drinking water solution) and treatment of the Arsenicosis victims. Read more on...
