Munni Saha’s very moving anniversary tribute to the founder of Daily Star and Ekushey TV A S Mahmud.
“When I bring out the amazingly inspirational stories of some of the most amazing common men and women of Bangladesh, I imagine in the corner of that table Abu Sayeed Mahmud is smiling — bringing forward the paperweight that has the word “THINK” scribed in it in front of me and telling me “Just think what a country of amazing possibility Bangaldesh is.” I often think of him and wonder in my career life, would I not meet another person like him whose wisdom and philosophy would shadow me on every good thing I do?”

Along with Munni Di and Shampa apa I would like to add that obviously, our chairman A S Mahmud is really the “potho prodorshak” of whole bangali nation, those who are enjoying benefits of private bangla television transmission in Bangladesh.
Today’s news, drama-entertainment, educational programmes or ownership of a television channel, name-fame anything in this industry as well as awareness level of the people of Bangladesh, whatever it is- created by that great man.
My heartiest gratitude to the most respected personality Mr. A S Mahmud.

I fully agree to it. But the present also shows that we are a very forgetful nation and do not honour quality. In Al Quran its mentioned that Wise men are not born in places where men do not honour them. So we will never find many wise men in future.
MAY ALLAH BLESS HIM WITH ETERNAL PEACE, HAPPINESS AND GLORY.

Tushar bhai,
You would be amazed to know that even though he was the founding managing director and publisher of daily star, Daily Star’s sister publication Prothom Alo refused to publish this piece by Munni withuot citing any reason. This is how we show respect to the Guni in Bangladesh!
I also got the following email from another friend today
I must say seeing a documentary on ETV on Mr Mahmud last night, and then sitting in court today watching Tareque Zia’s huge legal team at work, I was struck by the gross contradictions within which we live and the impossibly complex and tortuous path to justice that we face.

When I first returned to Dhaka in November 1999, one thing that struck me was the dominance of Hindi TV channels in Dhaka. Whether it was in the affluent Gulshan-Baridhara-DOHS or middle class Lalmatia or Mohammedpur or less affluent Nakhalpara, whether it was a religious conservative family or progressive secular type, whether they supported AL or BNP, primetime TV viewing was likely to be Kaun Banega Crorepati or some Indian TV serial. This has now changed. Bangla TV serials, talk shows, game shows, live stage programmes - they contest head to head with Indian ones. I don’t think this would have been possible without Ekushey.

A.S. Mahmud was a really great man indeed. He’s the one who made everyone, working at Ekushey very energetic and enthusiastic. His efforts brought a lot of influence and inspiration on the entire team of Ekushey. He was a great idol, a great person to admire. Even today we miss him.
MAY GOD BLESS HIM……………

I remember Nani Mama as a very kind and nice man. He was pioneer and successful businessman. Yes, we are proud of his contribution towards starting the independent TV channel in Bangladesh.
May Allah Bless him.

Thank You Munni Saha for your touchy article. He digs the basement for the house, now we live-in. Chairman Saheb is the father of the New wave of Bangladeshi Television. I would not hesitate to say that he is the first Bangladeshi entrepreneur who believed in younger generation.
Thank You again Munni Saha

Noni Mama was very smart, entertainiing family person. He ran a successful business, became President of Dhaka Stock Exchange.I meet this wonderful person lot of times - at his residence at Outer circular Road near Moghbazar Chowrasta (I believe B4 independence), Banani house after independence, in our house at Minto Road and elsewhere. Ekushey TV was a very timely needed gift to the country.
May Allah bless him. Ameen
