The confusions General Moeen U Ahmed needs to clear
Posted by Rumi under Bangladesh , Blogging , CorruptionIn Bangladesh general peoples’ disgust over corruption can’t be over emphasized. The collective anger, hatred and the plea for a relief is enormous. It is clear that, even in the short term, people are ready for any sort of sacrifice, like giving up their fundamental rights like freedom of speech, freedom of meeting, politics etc, if that helps routing out corruption from the society. In this context, it is not very surprising that this current government has enjoyed an overwhelming public support despite many drastic measures.
It is also not a meticulously hidden secret that General Moeen U Ahmed is the de facto ruler of the country although he maintains that he is merely the army chief under civilian leadership. Let me give some example why I say so. Example 1. Remember the camera front outburst of estranged Magistrate Rokonuddoula? He was saying that he visited General Moeen three times regarding the separation of judiciary issue and Gen Moeen rebuffed the demand to halt stripping administrative magistrates of judicial power. Why a leading administrative magistrate will go to army chief for such a purely non military issue and how the general will give decision in that regard? In Example 2, General Moeen has been repeatedly making statements about election date. In an ideal civil government, the army chief will only be there to help out the civil administration during election time. When or whether election will be held or not, that is purely the decision of the civil cabinet and the election commission.
So I don’t think that there will be too much argument in my statement that Gen Moeen is the prime leader of the government.
There is no doubt that this governments’ mandate is corruption. That means that the government leadership themselves are free of corruption allegations and they will not tolerate any sort of corruption be it nepotism, be it unconstitutional use of power.
However, recently the blogs came up with serious allegations of corruption against General Moeen U Ahmed. Some of the allegations are,
1. General Moeen breached existing rule by rehiring his brother as the MD of a bank which he is the chairman of.
2. General Moeen inappropriately (Does his income/asset allow the bank to grant 1 crore taka loan?) took nearly 1 crore taka loan from the same bank.
3. He paid off 66 lac taka in one year (Where did all these money come from?).
General Moeen however strongly denied all these allegations in an unprecedented media campaign both here in USA and in Bangladesh. General Moeen claimed that he only took 35 lac taka house building loan for building his DOHS home and also claimed that he had documents in support of that.
However the blogs immediately came up with impeccable evidence in support of the allegations they posted in their blogs. The evidence they came up with,
1. The audited prospectus of Trust Bank, (of which General Moeen is the Chairmen and General Moeen’s brother Iqbal U Ahmed is the managing Director) submitted to Bangladesh securities and exchange commission on May 17 2007, clearly states that General Moeen had an outstanding loan amount of Taka 99,69,215 at the end of 2005 and an outstanding loan amount of Taka 33,15,323 at the end of 2006. That means he paid off 66 lac taka between 2005 and 2006.
2. The bloggers also came up with the audited 2005 financial statement of Trust Bank which again confirms the loan amount shown in the prospectus of the bank submitted to SEC in Bangladesh.
3. The bloggers also came up with Bangladesh Bank regulations that prohibits
a. Having family members in the board of directors of a bank.
b. The amount of loan General Moeen took from the bank he is the chairman of the board of directors and his brother is the managing director.
These are serious documents and all were in public domain and taken from the website of Bangladesh Bank, Trust Bank and Securities and Exchange Commission of Bangladesh. So mere statement that “I only took 35 lac taka loan. The story of 1 Crore taka loan is false and fabricated story to malign me” is not enough. People tend to believe in what General Moeen says. He really comes across as a very honest gentleman. But a clarification is urgently needed about the trust bank and SEC documents. Why trust bank financial statement and prospectus repeatedly showing that general Moeen took 1 crore taka loan? It is essential that clear statements from General Moeen, Trust Bank authorities and SEC, clarify the controversies regarding the discrepancies in the loan documents and the claims made by General Moeen about the amount of loan.
This post absolutely is not intended to taint, demean or vilify General Moeen U Ahmed. It is agreed that a big portion of the people in Bangladesh do love him, and appreciate his efforts/courage to get Bangladesh rid of corruption. But for the sake of a better future of this government as well as that of Bangladesh, General Moeen U Ahmed must clear the confusions created by his statement and bank documents. This is needed for the sake of Bangladesh. The bloggers remain hellbent in following the doctrine they have preached all these days. Everyone is innocent until clearly proven guilty by a due process in a transparent and independent court of law.

I don’t think you will get any more explanation from MUA. Good luck with your expectation!!!!!

Thanks Rumi for your bold posting.
GMUA should know it better, all well that ends well. Whatever, pretext of GMUA’s PIG [paramilitary interim governmnt] made about their assuming power, whatever pledges they make to the public, whatever goody-goody performances they brag about in-and-abroad won’t work well if the secene finale flops. What the thread demands of GMUA of coming clean is the demand of the whole nation now.
GMUA is the ring master of the show or the dancing diva. While dancing no one expects he or she will try to maintain his or her hood [Nachte Eshe Ghomta Deye Dorker Kee]. Please dance with full passion, intent and vigor and be the National Idol. Otherwise, your current lovers will dessert you and make faces or dart rotten-eggs directed to you.
Thanks.

Why would he put Begum Hairspray in jail if he couldn’t convict her? It either is a very big sham or an actual attempt in the right direction.
Mr. Sajeeb Joy keeps ranting against Moin U for the fair trail of a criminal. Moin U assures him that “he is happy if Hasina makes it out”. Maybe this shut up Joy’s salviating mouth for power for the time being, but it also spreads more Benazir-Musharraf theories.
Everyone is stranded in the middle of whether to trust this guy or not. Maybe he took Tk 1 crore. Nothing when compared to Tarique who took in 20 crore’s a day. And Joy wanted to rake in 40 a day.
October 28th, 2007 at 2:47 am
Comment 4 combines personal, unwarranted attacks with an incredibly fallacious feat of reasoning.
Not to mention bad metaphors: “salviating[sic] mouth of power”, anyone? Sounds like the next Hong Kong martial-arts movie starring Jackie Chan.

“Mr. Sajeeb Joy keeps ranting against Moin U for the fair trail of a criminal.”
Ans: Iqbal Please explain who is the criminal in here. Kindly provide the documents on behalf of your such blanket comment.
“Maybe this shut up Joy’s salviating mouth for power for the time being, but it also spreads more Benazir-Musharraf theories.”
Ans: oh amazing assumption. I think you should go back to Rumi Bhai’s post and should Understand what he wants to speak. He
Just ask about MUA’s Transparency to the people. So read before you write some thing.
October 28th, 2007 at 4:51 am
Mr. Iqbal, AL was in power from 1996 to 2001. Therefore, if Joy wanted to make money (40 crore a day), he would have made it in that period. So, please do not try to spread propaganda about what he ‘wanted’ to do.
E Bangladesh also raised question about two directors of a bank from the same family which violates the BB rule. Now BB has amended its rule to allow more than one family members to stay in the Board of Directors. (Please refer to today’s Shamokal for details.)

It is time to revisit the history, It is nothing bew but the replay of what happened before. Who ever thinks that whatever is happening now has happenede for the first time in the history of 36 year old Bangladesh is outright wrong.
Please read all the articles to somewhat predict the future events in Bangladesh. It makes me wonder if Ershad is back as the 12 the adviser to moeen U ahmed.

if he is found to be clear of wrong doing, will all the bloggers who have rudely used this issue to ingratiate themselves with the twin heads of democracy and bay for the mans blood be issuing public apologies and try to undo the damage to the reputation of the man, institution and country?
or it the blog now as accountable as the press, akin to what we in the uk know as a ‘blag’?
October 28th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
You really think Sajeeb Joy joined Awami League to benefit the people of Bangladesh?
He wanted to be Tarique 2.0
Hasina wanted him to be Tarique 2.0
He would have raked in 3x more to make up for the “legal” financial losses Awami League were denied during the tenure of BNP. And in the process Tarique would be left alone because you can’t really jail your mentor.
I’m not saying Moin U is right. But what I am saying is that Joy or Tarique was a sure-way of destruction. There is no doubt on Joy or Tarique’s intent. (even though how hard they may try to make themselves appear innocent).
The time is too early to decide on the contributions of Moin U. But given the current scenario Moin U has the potential to become a bigger figurehead/idol than Zia or Mujib. Or on the other hand he could be another Pervez.

“Iqbal Please explain who is the criminal in here. Kindly provide the documents on behalf of your such blanket comment.”
I thought it is rather obvious which criminal I am talking about. Moin U’s lack of transparency is no reason to excuse someone who made millions during her first regime and whose entire generation has been riding on the eulogies of Mujib.
October 28th, 2007 at 4:34 pm
If taking 1 crore from trust bank was so transparent, then why did he lie? Why did he say that he took only 35 lakh?
All the documentary evidence suggest that he did take 1 crore.
Almost one year has passed. Where is the money Tareq had stolen? How come it is taking so long to find the money?
October 28th, 2007 at 6:27 pm
On my part, I will be happy to make a public apology if Moeen is found to be clear of any wrong-doings.
In fact, paraphrasing Moeen, “no one will be happier than me if he is found to be innocent.”

Rumi bhai,
Nice piece! General Moeen U Ahmed needs to give a clarification.
October 29th, 2007 at 12:47 am
There may be perfectly valid explanations for the discrepancies. Saif over at Adda discusses some issues here:
http://addafication.com/2007/10/23/quick-notes-on-the-trust-bank-gate/
These issues have been put under the rug by the mainstream media. Why? I asked this here:
http://jrahman.wordpress.com/2007/10/22/56/#more-56
The mainstream media - Prothom Alo, Amader Shomoy and such - have not painted an accurate picture of the General’s North American trip. Shadakalo has a number of posts, for example:
http://shadakalo.blogspot.com/2007/10/moeens-boston-trip-in-bangladeshi.html
Fugstar (9), I can only speak for myself. I am not going to apologise for raising questions. And I’m not going to ask an apology from Fugstar if the General fails to clear all the confusions. You and I are private citizens, and I believe in rights to speak our mind without needing to apologise for it.
The General is a public servant whose livelihood depends on the taxpayers’ money, and he needs to clear the confusions. None of the blogs cited here is calling him corrupt, but they are pointing out holes in his story. It’s the holes, not the pointing out, that’s doing damage to the man, the institution and the country.

Correction #7, the news of changing BB regulation on having more than one member of family in the board of director is published in yesterday’s Jugantor, not in Shamokal.
October 29th, 2007 at 4:59 am
FZ
Even under this amendment (http://jugantor.com/online/news.php?id=104633&sys=1 ), MUA and Bros cannot be director as they have less than 5% share. Please refer to my comment here (http://jrahman.wordpress.com/2007/10/11/on-corruption/ Comment#13), where I mentioned it.
October 29th, 2007 at 5:39 am
No problem. Just wanted some clarification is all. Jyoti bhai has pretty much said what I wanted to say. Comment #9 is probably the most serious issue here.
October 29th, 2007 at 8:08 am
Iqbal, It is not the issue what you and I think. I advise you before making any blanket comment Just make sure if you have enough evidence with you or not to support of your such statement. Any way I have no wish to give undue importance to waste my time in your such comment. If you can bring supporting document , please speak then.
October 29th, 2007 at 10:37 am
jyoti,
the positions of accuser-righteous-citizen and non accuser-negligent-citizen arent so reversible.
Much of the opinion on Gen Moeenuddin does cross the bounds of whats within norms and manners. It important that these figures be kept in good humour not assisted in their pathways to becoming cynical toerags.
Words that we typed weeks ago are frozen in the air, its not like speech, its worse than the printed word in that sense. Its enough to almost make me shut my trap!
Much of BD blogworld is busy demolishing the reputations of people. Its an extension of a common national trait and a reflection of low standards of justice. It is problem of going to internet and satelite TV without much time in the period of mature, restrained literacy.
for some people the ‘result’ of the general hitting the Indian papers was good.
im just wondering what that interpretation means and its not good.
October 29th, 2007 at 8:00 pm
regarding MUA’s visit to Harvard.
http://bangladeshwatchdog.blogspot.com/2007/10/general-moeens-mysterious-harvard.html
I wonder why mainstream newspaper refrain from ‘picking up’ these stories.
Can someone please elucidate?

Is there any proof whether General Moin or the Trust Bank prospectus is telling the truth regarding his loan from the bank?
October 30th, 2007 at 1:45 am
Ahbab, either the General or the prospectus is wrong. Despite what Fugstar says about asking questions as rude, it’s important that the confusion is cleared up.

Aziz, Is there any proof that trust bank is not own by Mr Ahbab Aziz ?:)
October 30th, 2007 at 4:48 am
Agree that the General should challenge the Trust Bank document to come out clean of the ‘bankgate’.

moeen’s days are numbered, don’t you worry guys he will face the same music as all the others have faced in the past.
Thought moeen learned some lessons from history. but he has not at all.
Moeen can you answer me one thing ”why major sayeed iskander free?” is it because he is batch mate? hmm now that is nepotism, so you are not clean either.
well done mr general practice what you preach, ok
February 11th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
well this article was an eye opener! its really sad that he is taking advantage of his power. he is practicing nepotism at its extreme, which is setting a very bad example for everyone. i hope he makes clear to the people what is really going on! its an absolute outrage!!!
February 11th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
i really feel that mr.moeen is practicing immoral deeds. what goes around…comes around. someone should go tell mr.moeen this.
