Political Vacuum
Khaleda Zia and company are almost destined to go into an exile based on recent major media reports. Her counterpart Sheikh Hasina is clutched in uncertainty to return back to Bangladesh and there are clear indications of her eventually facing the same fate as Khaleda Zia. Unconfirmed news even calls for pressure on JP Chief Ershad and LDP Chief B Chowdhury to leave the country in the near future.
Is this a sign of a political vacuum in the making? Waiting for the proposed election towards the end of 2008 is roughly about 18 months and that may sound like a long time. But is 18 months long enough to breed “clean politicians” when decision 2008 comes and we get to decide who to entrust with our country’s future and direction? In the short-term, we are all enjoying the enormous tasks of tackling corruption and cleansing of our political system that was slowly stirring us towards a “Façade democracy”. But what lies ahead in the long-term especially when the election takes place with a possible vacuum in our political landscape?
