Did not see much discussion on the new move by the CG to create a National Human Rights Commission. The Daily Star had an editorial on March 21 and a follow up article by Md. Anisur Rahman today:
Can we take on the challenge of human rights?
Md Anisur Rahman
The decision of the CG to form a National Human Rights Commission (HRC) is a very welcome one. This should be the time to understand the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) toward social and economic conduct of the nation, which would be the tasks of the HRC to oversee.

I tried to stir a discussion on this topic last week but perhaps my approach didn’t have enough oomph.

Rehan,
Sorry I did not see your post last week.
I just read that piece along with all the responses - don’t sell yourself short - you generated a decent amount of “oomph”.
I hope the end result of all the changes going on will be the return of some basic human rights and the treatment of individuals with some decency by the law enforcement officials (just one e.g. - remember the journalists covering the cricket match getting beaten up?)

People are understandably at odds that CG is taking this initiative during the State of Emergency when civil rights are basically suspended.
Among many great things that the CG undertook, backed by the support of the army chief who sounds like decent patriotic person – there are some glitches that the CG remains accountable for:
-eviction of people from slum without prior notice or a rehab plan
-eviction of the street hawker without prior notice or reinstate plan
-staying mum while extra judicial killings continued
-granting ACC the authority to arrest anyone accused without warrant and seize their property
It will be interesting to see what kind of strict punishment they will suggests for the wife batterers or the Fatwabaj that tortures the hindus in villages.

The crossfire killings after two RAB men died in Savar was seriously horrible. At least 6 persons died in crossfire after the incident and we did not see much hue and cry from our media about it.
