Urgent: Modhupur eco park activist Chalesh Ritchil killed
Posted by admin under Ethnic Minority , Human RightsThe report speaks for itself:
Report by an activist/
There is a sad news in Modhupur forest again. Yesterday, on 18 March 2007, one Garo activist in Modhupur forest was killed by Army (They call it “Joint Forces”). His name is Cholesh Ritchil, age 41, father of five children, 4 daughters and one son. He was a brave local leader and used to stand against the corruption of forest department. He also took strong participation in Eco-park movement in past years. Forest Department filed more than 30 cases against him. Fr. Subrata Baniface Tolentino, csc, a Holy Cross Priest in Jachatra Catholic Church, Modhupur told me this morning that Cholesh Ritchil was the symbol of braveness for protect the rights of indigenous peoples. So, many Bengalis, forest officers did not like him.
Cholesh Ritchil was arrested by Army with Police yesterday in the afternoon at around 1:30 pm at Kalibari bazar, Modhupur thana and brought to Kakraid army camp. Other Garos Protap Jambil, 36 years old, Tuhin Hadima, 19 years old and Piren Simsang were also arrested in same time. These four Garos were brought to Kakraid Army camp at around 2:00 pm, as Mr. Ajoy Mree said. Then they were beaten mercilessly in the camp. It is reported that Cholesh Ritchil was killed in the camp and other three Garos got seriously injured. Protap Jambil was sent to Mymensingh Medical College and can not walk now for wounds in the body. The dead body of Cholesh Ritchil was brought by the military/police in Modhupur thana health complex at around 9:30 pm at noght and then he was already dead.
The former MP Dr. Abdur Razzak (MP of Modhupur) called me last night and informed me that in this situation it is difficult to do something against these kinds of serious violations of human rights on his behalf. But he will try to do and do not accept this.
Bishop Paul Ponen Kubi csc, Bishop of Mymenesingh Diocese also called me to do smoething last night and this morning again.
MUST READ piece at Tasneem’s blog with pictures on Modhpur which has a full overview on the whole issue of eco-park and the marginalising of our Garo community
Some recent developments
Urging the caretaker administration to take immediate attention to this and ensure proper investigation and punishment for the death of Cholesh Ritchil.

Didn’t know the whole story. Still not clear about everything but I understand a terrible injustice is going on there. Environment is for people, there is no reason to uproot people to preserve environment. Let me know if there is anything I can do.
March 19th, 2007 at 10:29 pm
I am not sure if this happened because of the man’s ethnicity. People who have unlimited and unchecked power (in this case the Army) will remove anyone posing a threat to what they wanna do.
I do not know what we can do. Maybe we can arrange to let international human rights agencies know about the incident. The only force that can make the Army stop and listen to is the international community.
March 19th, 2007 at 11:02 pm
It is very disturbing news no doubt. I just read the Daily Prothom Alo, police is saying the accusation is not right!!!
March 20th, 2007 at 12:34 am
We have to stop this RAB killing now. Give ACC and Police or make Police in to RAB. Bring them every single suspects or real criminal to the court and deal with the there. Otherwise more Cholesh Ritchil will be killed. I believe this government can make a proper system to deal with it.
March 20th, 2007 at 1:01 am
The whole episode sounds like a typical Drama (Shajano Ghotona). I am sure we have some blogers here having good contact with the advisors. Is it possible to raise this issue to the authority level?
We have seen several times when powerful people gets concerned things change, can we not expect that to happen once again?
Otherwise it will be evident that we havn’t made any progress in this area(”ADIBASHI” related issue) since the British period.

No doubt, just one or two such controversial actions would ruin all the good achievements of this mass supported CTG! I wonder whether these bizarre incidents are ’sabotage’within the CTG. There are always some “BIBHISHONs” everywhere!Definitely people would like to know from CTG what ‘actually’ happened and why?
March 20th, 2007 at 5:49 am
I suppose the real story will get buried in Bangladeshi media. This blog is actually read by most of the international human rights group reps. So raising it here will get the due attention.
Regarding raising it with the advisers, indeed, its a good idea. If there is a parallel force out their trying to discredit the CG, they need to come clean about it and be transparent about it. Anyone here knows the forestry advisor Choudhury Sajjadul Karim to hear his version of the story on it and what steps are being taken to investigate this.
March 20th, 2007 at 7:32 am
Asif et al. Thanks for raising your voices against this tyranny. But, I don’t think advocating with the advisors/CG is going to get any positive results here. We are citizens under a military backed government here in Dhaka. In CHT or Modhupur, the undeclared martial law wears a more bared tooth presence where the army calls the shot: in this case tortures an advasi leader to death. How do you fight this martial impunity is the question while the “advisors” remain “a band of useless comedians.”
March 20th, 2007 at 10:50 am
Tasneem, Thanks for your honest comments. But
I think from some where some body has to take initiative.Raising voice is the most important here.Right now This is the best way of process.
March 20th, 2007 at 3:21 pm
I fully agree with raising our voice. If we don’t raise the issue how can we tell nothing will happen. If we fail then we will know that at least we tried. I don’t know about DPs working strategy and methods. but If willing DP can send press release condemning this and other excessive use of power. Or it can be a joint press release by several Bangladeshi NGOs. If we think that Govt. will react negatively towards press release and it will damage the cause rather than help it, then how about a joint meeting of NGOs with Govt. But press should be involved too. I am sure DP knows many Human Rights NGOs, but i know some too. i can help with contacts if DP wants.
Finally, no we should not keep quiet about all this. I don’t think its an act of sabotage against CTG. But breakdown in chain of command, power struggle from within, and using current drive to settle past scores are possible reasons. no matter how little we talk about the issue, attitude of armed force towards ethnic communities is not particularly friendly.

Dear Asif and All
I was also highly concerned about the case. I visited the place for making the issue public. I felt there are some smell of manipulating the issues too. Well Cholesh had as many as 28 cases in Modhupur Thana. Police claims he had more in other thana total making a figure 39. May be Police misfed me. But I also observed a opposition Garo group in distributing sweets….may be an internal clash. They too claimed Choresh was feroshas. I tried to contact Joint Forces Personnel and denied to arrange my interview. However, I am after it to find out the details. seemingly Cholesh too were not a clean case. Police also claimed that he was absconding after being convicted in 4 cases. Wishing a devine peace for Cholesh. Tonmoy.
March 20th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
Thanks Tonmoy for first hand information on this. But my position stands unchanged. We have to say no to torture and murder in custody. There should be no exception to it.

Asif My request to you whatever you do just make it cautiously. I think Every DP member

way the reaction is coming up from
“The military coup in slow motion?” thread
at least I am not taking It normal way. so all
of Us should be thinking of Asif’s side as well.Even we need to hear Threat that state of emergency is going on etc etc.
Shohana , I think you have already shown your interest to focus on this issue on NGO
.so every one of us should support
Asif directly or Indirectly.

Unfortunate but true. Lets not get diverted by sweeping remarks. I agree what happened was an accident cause I dont believe the Joint force will ever do such thing (killing). There are few vested group behind it to exploit the situation. Flash back what happened when earlier there were endeavour to restore deforestration. I would urge upon all of you to go and visit the forest. I am sure u shall agree this is no more forest its all banana forest now….think about the country where we are heading ….an environmental disaster is imminent. I have sympathy for the deceased but think the defroestration where millions of lives of Bangaladesh is at a risk….So long I could gathered the victim was a member of the community not a leader. He was a muscleman who had 200 bighas of land at his posession (Illigal). He is used by some of very big shots of the country to earn illegal wages from the forest… I think we should not be imotional about what happened and make it an issue….. we should be rather assertive to find out who he was , who are the people working behind them to creat agitation and why….Last year there tribal leader Albert Mankin (stays at Gulsan) got 3 lakhs US dollar as donation against this garos….where is that money? was the money given for his luxarious livings? ask readers by yourself…..why the issue is so much ? who all are behind it???? visit the forest and scratch your heads then you all will find we are heading towards an environmental disaster….stop deforestration…dont make it a issue to go one deforestration… help the country,,,,we dont support death….But deforestration will take whole Bangaldesh in to grave….think that
admin’s note: The comment above has come from the same IP address who has been posting as “soldier”, “Tonmoy” (see no: 12) and now “Rakesh”. Using nick name is fine. However, to enhance an argument, posting as multiple people in the same post is unethical. Users will be banned if they resort to such unethical practice. The comment is deleted but is still published to show the nature of the propaganda.

This Soldier/Rakesh/Tonmoy character reminds me of a maniac from gazipur who has long been banned from Drishtipat.

My best regard to you.
I am not clear what is the wrong and unethical if many writes from the same IP address. Can not you take it positively that a common IP address / a single connection / an office / house / organization may have many users. I know, because of not having enough money the pre paid INTERNET users using same IP / single same connection.

Please be kind in stating / blaming someone having knowledge not supported by true IT knowledge, something of the reality.

Please consider your verdict; we need ideas, information, vision, will, truth, commitment and positive comprehensive jesters to do something for the nation.
Even, if some body uses nicknames and using same IP to support or to influence his / her vies positively for good cause – I think there is no problem, unless he does not involve in the personal gain. What these three names (even is the same person) from it?
Best wishes to all.

It is ridicolous to see how the army atrocities are continued despite of the good will of the Dr. Fakhruddin’s Caretaker rule. He and his Advisors are trying their level best to broing all corruption and injustice under control but apparently it seems that all the departments that are under the control of Dr. Yajuddin Ahmed, the president, still continue their atrocities against the people. Adivasis are always victims of injustice although we, bengalis also may claim the same. But I look at the problem of the adivasis of Bangladesh in another and special perspective. Their rights are violated from many sides. I surely wish very strongly to condemn the acts of the army where they killed a very strong personality who was fighting to promote the rights of the Garo adivasis. At the same time I hope the Caretaker Govt. of Dr. Fakruddin will look into the matter in a particular way so that the adivasis also get the benefit of this government.

My best regards to you. You are the only courageous person who have pointed and raised the voice against army and its atrocities. You will certainly be encouraged and praised by millions, my salute to you for your great courage. I am sure you know in depth about the army more than army knows by themselves. You must be from a social platform (may be got deep in touch with army environment…who knows you may be from army family). Given the account of your courage and concern, I only can say about army with my small knowledge it does not spare any of its member for the misdeeds and what to talk about atrocities even I am a witness where I saw army instructed with serious concern to its all members that even its members should not and must not be involved with the petty little things like ‘ checking hair cuts of the people, not wearing of helmet by second seaters of any motorcycle and many many things (then where they have scope to practice atrocities? Yes there were decades ago when its members were brutally killed by bad guys. There may be certain mistakes even intentional bad deeds by individuals, this does not any way blame whole organization I think)’.
Sweeping comment and incomprehensive postings can only encourage those corrupt, thieves who played fun with the fate and fortune of our citizens FOR YEARS TOGETHER. The members of the army are not brought from other countries or from heaven or hell, they are your known, brothers /sisters or relatives and certainly they are from Bangladeshi community. In no way I would expect some DP bloggers /readers to again raise the question that, when I have taken contact the legal advocacy for army.
You wrote, ‘…army where they killed a very strong personality who was fighting to promote the rights of the Garo adivasis..’ May I humbly request you to be specific about the heroic jobs this great Chollesh did for his community (you must have many many knowledge) (not general comment that he was good, he raised vice for the right of garos residing there). Please mention also, what dangerous corruptions and anti sate activities he did. I never and never and never support any extra judiciary killings.
Rosaline, please note I was the first person in DP to say, the in charge army officer and members to be temporarily discharged before any investigation on this sad incident begins.

Dear All,
Chalesh Ritchil might be a culprit or corrupted or most wanted to police and state. Our question is why wasn’t he handed over to police and produced before court? Look at the report , “Before the burial, as per religious customs, Choles Ritchil’s dead body was given a bath. Those who performed the religious bath (name withheld for safety reasons) reported the following torture marks:
“Choles’s two eyes plucked, testicles removed, anus mutilated, two hand palms smashed , nails of 3 fingers of the right hand removed, left hand thump finger nail removed, two palms had holes, upper right hand had severe would, several blood stains on the back part of the body, in both thighs middle part there had been two holes, back part of the body had several black marks, several deep marks of wounds on both lower legs, there had been black marks on feet, no nail on thump of right foot, all fingers of two hands were broken.”
If the report is true, it is clear to us that he was killed because he was leading the poor Garo people. The way he was killed suggest that the cops just fulfilled their contempt towards Garo minority people. Major Toufic Elahi, who knows, might be a racist or just implementing just an agenda of anti-ethnic people!
Words of Tonmoy and Mr. Alo also doubtful. I pity them. May God save their soul from burning Hell. It seems to us they are Gyan papi. We may be wrong. If it proved we will be happy.
We visited the area and were informed by some people those who worked against Garo people’s interest during the anti-eco-park movement (took benefit from forest department, 15-20 garo people, and wanted eco-park to be implemented along with some BNP men)distributed sweets among them).
It was told by some local Bangali People that Chalesh was considered as enemy of present UP chairman as he stood for UP election in the past and failed for only several votes.
An old Bangali man asked me angrily,” Tareq r montry-tontrider k to mare na hal…(Sha..) (Joint Forces). Dos korlei ki emne emne manus marte hoibo? Emon ki dos korse hei(he)?” “It’s the work of Forest department, Chairman, eco-park wanted people and some local journalists who didn’t like him misled the forces…” uttered a Bangali young man from the back. Another boy whispered,”Shhhh..betarao sangbadik aste..!”
Let us wait for the truth. W may not dare to prove it, certainly there are some people to do it!

Dear all,
It’s very sad that Chalesh da is no more with us. He himself used to say to me,” I am matobbor, not a true leader; become a true leader gradually. I may be forgiven by our people as I am less educated but you, those who are well educated, would not be forgiven for the same mistake.” I told him that my role is quite different as I am a mere college teacher. I am not a social or political leader. Then he sugessted me to become a true leader in my own line (leader in education).
Just last November he phoned me saying that he had a strong desire to educate his elder son at Notre Dame College or St. Joseph College. Now it has become a merely dream as he is no more.
I dn’t think he was above humanity, i don’t want to say he was innocent but he was not terrorist or most wanted as police administration and some people try to say these days. Valo mondo miliyei seo chilo ek manushh….
My most sincere condolence to his wife, son and daughters. May God grant him eternal peace.

What kind of man Cholesh Ritchil was is not nearly as relevant as the manner in which he was killed. What was done to him was done by people. It is despicable that any human being could do such things to another. And it is a terrible way for someone to die. Irrespective of reasonings, the condemnation of this atrocity is both justified and necessary.
April 7th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
It was not the first time for Garo people’s leader to be murdered in that area. Local leader Ninthonath Hadima murdered on Happy Christmas day, Adibasi Nari Nettri (Women leader) Killed at broad daylight just beside her residence, Sport organizer Sentu Nokrek murdered, eco-par activist Piren Snal shot to death from a peacful procesion during the movemeny 3January,2004 while another more than 25 including women and several children recieved bullet injured. Odhir Dopho and Bihen Nokrek shot to death by Forest Department while Ms. Shishilia Dopho still under treatment (fired by FD).
The Garo indigenous people filed cases against these killings but didn’t received any justice! That’s why they don’t have dependence on the court also. At the sametime many of them have to go to attend to the court almost half of the months as they have numerous false forest cases; many leaders including Mr. Ajoy A mree, Mr. Nere N. Dalbot, Mr.Poncharaj,Mr. Proshant sent to jail several times in such FD cases;even children have such cases. Chalesh killed and some more leaders might be killed in near future as state himself behind the killers!!!
I hope present CG will kindly prove to the indigenous people they are not patronizing the killers and all the citizen ‘irrespective caste, religion, creed’ receiving equal rights according to the our Holy Constitution.
Dear Admin,
Please keep my name unpublished.
Thank You

We would like to thank Ex-Mp of Modhupur seat Dr. Abdur Razzak as he at least acknowledged his unability to do something to Chalesh Ritchil. We know these type of MPs just can do anything or everything for themselves. They are good for nothing for the country or society.

Today on 28 April is the 40th day of Chalesh Ritchil’s brutal killing. There is no tradition of celebrating ‘Challisha’ in Garo culture. But it has become a difference for Chalesh Ritchil. Today Chalesh’s Muslims wellwisher’s of his area observing Challisha at his house to remember and honour his good deeds for Muslim community during his life time. To them,”Chalesh vai was not only leaders for the Garo people, he was a true leader for all people irrespective of cast and religion. He assisted many poor muslim students for their school and college expenses….”
1,50,000 TK. (one lac and fifty thousand) has been collected from Muslim community for this Challisha. Thousands of Muslims people will gather on this occaision. Garo leaders are invited by the Muslim people to join with them.

Dear all,
It is the nature of human kind to forget everything one day. We have forgot late Gidita Rema, Bihen Nokrek, Adhir Dhopho, Ninthonath Sangma and Piren Snal who sacrificed their lives to protect their right and community.
We are also going to forget Chalesh Ritchil too. His eldest son’s education is almost going to be stopped due to financial crisis. Sandha di, wife of Ritchil, told me that she is facing much difficulty to run her family let alone educational expenses of the children!!!!
Is there anybody who can come forward and help them for their education?

Shandha! It is very crucial time for you as the education is very high expectation for Indegenous people in Bangladesh. People ask me what are you doing for beloved children of Cholesh Ritchil, answer is too difficult for me. I cry and drop a little bit water from my eye. Yes there is no solution for the children of departed Cholesh. Justce delayed is justice denied it is tru to this poor Cholesh’s family.

There is a proverb, ” Where there is a will, there is a way.” Yes, believe me, we can help for their education if we just try/ wish. Let’s go forward and do something for their education at least. We can throw a dollar, can’t we? We usually do that even for a beggar… ca’t we do it for the late People’s leader’s son and daughter? For a brave heart who used to contribute for the education of many poor students?

“Fight with crocodile in water and land is not the same” One asked me what are you doing for late Cholesh’s wife? I answred some are helping from the behind and not publishing some are not helping but publishing to media that they are doing everything. It is to note that Cholesh’s family need our strong support but not publication. The second tome post mortem is completted but the report is not came to the light. It is justce delayed. Army people are trying to prove that they are favor of IP and we have seen some cake have been offered to IP where wife of Cholesh was present. But why the report is pending? Let us ask ourselves what can we do for justice which will be long term benefit for the IP in Bangladesh and in the world.

You all right Walki Abima. But did u notice, many people left the place without enjoying the cake? Chalsesh’ wife was forced to attend there to receive small X-mas gift from the Army man. Perhaps they wanted to show the world that they are friendly to the IP and they they did it.

You all might notice I wrongly submitted a message written by Mr. Babul D’ Nokrek. I don’t know why my pettition didn’t go properly. Sorry for this. Mr. Nokrek might get irritated to see his prayer in the name of my one.
I just written something in support of Mr. Nokrek.

Whatever it is, if it is needed we, as a human being, should come forward(if we have the capacity/solvency).
Mr./Ms. Walki Abima or Mr. Theophil or Mr. Babul or Mr. Serenjing or Walzan those who are from Madhupur can take initiative in this regard.

Dear All,
I read all the writings of Mr. Theophil, Ms. Serenjing, Abima Walki and others. Thank you all. I don’t see any fault in coming to greet IP on the eve of X-mas by Joint forces or offering gifts to the wife of Chalesh on the same occasion if they really did it from their inner heart. If it is showy or eye wash then it is too sad. I was present there and didn’t think in this way. Now I understand why many people left the place taking their share of the X-mas Cake!
Thank you Ms. Taposi Sangma. I never mind and hope everybody could understand the mistake.
I think we can help for their education all together.

Dear Babul
It is not easy to survive in this world. It is one of the bed news for Modhupur area that another brand of development is arriving in the area. The Nisharga project which imlemented in Srimongal at Lawachora forest which is forest of 2000 years old BC. They claim to be making heaven for the indigenous people. THEY ARE TRYING TO CONVINCE local people(IP) that it will help for development of the IP for their survival. we have to clear about their agenda. They are working with the forest department which is always destroing the culture of IP. They do not beleive that IP are human being. Abima again may fall in trap like eco tourism or so call national park. One of Garo leader like Mr. Mike M Mrong has become the consultant of the project(no degree) and other Garos of the area are attempted to jion the project as staff at lower level.
Thanks

Dear Admin,
Pls don’t publish my name.
Dear Abima Walki,
We all are aware about the so-called development project. I think Mr. Babul also knows well. He is keeping himself away from all types of social and political activities now-a-days, God knows, why?
I heard Mr. Mike M Mrong talked to Mr. P. Chiran and Mr. B. Nokrek very secretly. What was the topic(?)nobdy knows. I afraid he (Mr. Mrong) tried to convince Mr. Nokrek and Chiran. Both of them might be the terget to be convinced as they first stood against the former Eco-park, so-called development in the Modhupur area.
I can’t understand why finally Mr. Mrong is going to betray with the IP? Takar jonno? Fund pabar jonno? Is he a dalal of newage? Or ovabe sovab nosto? Consultant? What a consultant! A consultant without degree? Bura boyose dabran khawar khayesh?
I heard another sad news! Joyenshahiro pakha gojatchhe. They are helping Mike and Nishorgo people!
Walki gantong waiting for them. Isongni tamuk ballanade ching.a de balza.

Dear Mr. Nokrek,
Please don’t try to be as clean as ice. We know you are helping Mr, Mike M. Mrong. I heard you also send some people to Sylhet to visit Nisorgya Project and the coordinator was Mr. Mrong for that visit. M I right?
