I was touched by Asif Saleh’s recent piece in the daily Star about the two new generation leaders of Bangladesh Awami League. Undoubtedly very true and thoughtful observation and enough to make one very depressed.
Indeed a new bunch of leadership is developing in both BNP and Awami League. In Awami league case, Saber Hssain Chy, Asaduzzaman Noor, Sohail Taj, a bunch of Sheikh generations including Liton MP, Sk Selim’s sons and definitely Shajib Wajed Joy etc have brought a refreshing air in the politics. People liked their approach to different issues and their demeanor and public speak won them nationwide attention and respect.
On the other hand the hard line BNP has taken throughout this government is generally attributed to a bunch of newbie’s in BNP politics under the leadership of Khaleda Son Tareque. These less polite, occasionally very cunning and cruel and grossly corrupt new generation include Babar, Dulu, Alal, Swapon, Tripti, Mirza Abbas, Goyeswar Roy, Illias Ali, Haris Chy etc. They control hawa Bhavan and almost certainly the prime minister’s office too. Starting from last election, BNP is effectively controlled by these young turks.
And in fact, they, so far, won all the battle against Awami league, including the April 30th dateline and others. Awami League occasionally felt helpless in front of the ruthless tactics of new leadership of BNP especially when in a matter of a week four senior AL leaders were beaten mercilessly in public and made crippled for the time being.
And an irony of fate is that, this hawk younger generation of BNP follows the teachings of a school of older generation Awami League leaders which include Zalil, Amu, Nasim, Tofayel, Maya, Razzak, Sajeda, Motiya, Suranjit etc.
The older ” standing Committee”, gentlemen generation of BNP including B Chy, Saifur Rahman, Col Oli, Shamsul Islam, Moin Khan, Mannan Bhuiyan, MK Anwar etc were totally helpless in front of hawks like Tofayel, Nasim etc. during BNPs 91-96 rule.
There is a general appreciation that with some exceptions, BNP’s 91-96 rule was the most democratic and tolerant of Bangladesh governments and a failure of that government gave birth to these dark hawkish generation of Treque Zia and Haris Chowdhury. And the now helpless hawkish Awami League stalwarts have to take some responsibility for making the seniors of BNP a failure and letting the hawks take over BNP.
The future of Bangladesh democracy is in extreme danger at the hand of the hawks of both side.
To nurture the infant democracy, Bangladesh needs a BNP free of Tareque-Haris, and led by 91-96 like generation and an Awami League led by this new Saber Chy, Noor, Sohail Taj generation, not by the generation of Zalil, Amu or Tofayel. .

Rumi vai very good posting. The few name that you mentioned in the AWL younger generation sounds little familiar. Being with them, playing with them, going to school with them and even growing up with them and their families. Yes the new generations of AWL are vibrant and able people.Agree on that. But given chance of power what they would turn out we have to look and see. I have full trust in my views and knowledge and friedship on them.
Secondly the way BNP new comers are concerned they are not all like as you mention brother. MP IG Khalequ’s(Brahmanbaria4) son Jalal new BNP uprising is the most honest MP’s son I have ever known in my 50 MPs son’s circle. Zafrul Islam son Alamgir is very popular for his modesty and honest behavior in Bashkali too. There are so many example’s in both part of the coin.So the point is we should be respectful to both the parties when we compare them.
Not to Mention Maya’s son Dipu and Abul Hasnat Abdullah’s son’s and couple of MP’s of DHAKA constitution’s sons and family members during the 1996-2001 regime almost destroyed the image of than AWL regime. These are the very same people and the so called young generation who will run under AWL tickets in the near future and two of them mentions above are inspiring candidate for election 2007.
Con currently the family member the now Dhaka 9 constitution MP also grabbing everything he could
while he can.
Grass from the other side looks green Rumi bhai.
Who the hell is not corrupt in damn Bangladesh?
Thanks for the posting this is very good posting but just wanted to put some substance.
I don’t do injustice
I don’t let injustice happen to me
I don’t let injustice happen in front of my eyes.

In 2017 I would have 26 of my friends be in the Parliament of Bangladesh for sure.Yes for sure. if they are well kept and healthy and as god permit them to live that long. So knowing them understanding them I believe that Change will come to Bangladesh but it will come from both parties equally from AWL and BNP. Yes AWL is the oldest Pary they have more core values and they are also the back bone party of the liberation war people from their back ground are more nationalist and hard core but some instance goes the same to BNP cos Zia had also put some good blood in the younger generation with his modesty and smartness. Yes I disrespect the things that are happening by Tareq Zia and Begum Zia.They have also ruined the name of Zia a lot.

You are right kawser. I talked about general trend and there are exceptions in both side.
Ehsanul Haq MIlan ( Despite his wife’s involvement in fake university) did a very good job in controlling cheating in exams and does not sounmd cocky at all.
On the other hand, most newbies in AL ( except Taj, Noor and Saber) are yet to be scrutinized more carefully. You only can do that if AL returns to power. We only can hope they will not be like junior Hasnat Abdullah or junior Maya etc.
I was talking about newbies involved in national politics. Every individual MPs som/daughter is beyond my radar screen.
A major point of this post was to emphasize the role of current Awami League leadership may have played , with their constant non-cooperation with senior BNP leaders between 91-96, in paving way for a hawkish generation in BNP.

Rumi bhai, Tarique Rahman and his boyz are driving away the current generation. The generation that was drawn to BNP by Zia is being driven away by Tarique.
I see this trend across the board, at least among NRB’s.
One of the biggest things that I praise about AWL is that they have invested heavily in their kid’s education.

Rumi bhai, Very good point. In fact, that is the point of my next write up. When I see these guys (Amu, Jalil) doing Gossha because they were not allowed to speak in a rally, I am reminded that they have not changed a bit in the past 5 years. AL will do well to dump these old and corrupt fools. Every time I see them in TV, I get severely turned off.

Salam Dhaka bhai
Yeah you have very good point but onething to remember the money that paid for those tuition fees and expensive car running in the foreign soil mainly in UK and USA and ( the roads of Texas Austin) are beared by the innocent tax payers money.I appreciate even the bad money was used to bring some good. But given choice in all these MP Ministors son AWL and BNP were all of them were meritious brillian extra ordinary students?
Than why I don’t hear about their scholorship or other achievements? are they very modest?
Asif you are nice to the old guards.I would put them in a sheep and drop them in the middle of the ocean and give them a mike and some speakers and a podium. They can’t expect better
than that.
Any given day Maya Amu Razzak Nasim Pultu, Hanif are just a liability to AWL.
There is an accounting saying
“One time’s asset becomes onetimes liability”
Thats what has happened to AWL. The old gaurds are rotten to the bottom core. We need new people.New lead new beginning.
thanks
Kawser Jamal
Free money is always spend wisely AWL did educate their Kids what they learn in the school and this high paying college and schools we would see when they will lead us in the main stream.
September 26th, 2006 at 11:18 pm
Well Rubel, is foreign education synonimous to better education? And better education for one job may not better for another job like sreet politics.
One reason AL kids are foreign educated is because AL has been out of power 25 of last 30 years. For insecurity, livelihood and other issues, leaders felt pressed to send their kids for overseas education.
I see history repeats here wth a twist.
Lincoln’s inn educated barrister Jamiruddin Sirker or Mirza Golam Hafiz was no match for, Tofayel Ahmed, a full time street politician from high school .
Tareque Rahman/Nasir uddin Pintu may go under my or your skin but they may be the right kind of leader for Bangladesh streets.
A bad thing is that, we the educated, polished, enlighted bunch of NRB here in DP blogs do not represent Bangladesh streets. If we did, bangladesh would have been a much better place.
September 26th, 2006 at 11:58 pm
Rumi bhai
Let the right time comes we will walk the street of Bangladesh. I believe in the theory
“Time is always right” but for walking the streets of Bangladesh one has to be very well prepared because the enemy there are very strong.
Foreign education synonimous to better education I would not say yes on this. The 95% of Indian educated politicians made the 99% of the policy maker position in India. They are smart they don’t give away their hard earned money to the west. Most Indian’s comes after graduation and get here in Graduate Master’s level education with GA and TA and all tuition paid and than get free education. The stupid
Bangladeshi parents send their hard earn money to get their sons educated with 50-60 K for 4 years college degree and still this kids learn nothing.
Don’t loose hope brothers things will happen we just need to be united and work hard for the better cause better Bangladesh. Its just few people change the world not thousand. So even we are few in numbers here but one day we will make a difference on the street of Bangladesh.
I have fait in myself and in my God
thanks

Rumi et al, I’m afraid you people are exaggerating about’s Tariq’s negative side or his alleged corruption. I have total negative impression about the whole nation. So tariq or anyone else are not alien here that they will be immune from all the negative influences.
You people cited BNP neophytes and labeling them corrupt and also cited the names of freshbies in AWL who are promising ‘per your assessment and wishfully will be honest, dynamic and positive change-agents. You can hope for that but I’m sure it will never be fulfilled.
The political machine in our country is a real blind alley leadidng to the most infectioous corruption hub. Nobody wil be able to come back white clean from there. It’s easier said than done.
As most are bad, even if there are some good guys tries to stay good, they finally succumb to be bad with bad association or being criticized as bad even though they are good for sometimes.
We are such people who always jealous of others; we never tolerate somebody who can surpass us; we make up stories and engaze in character assasination until we get him down.
I have lived in four continents but found no country which have both teel [sesame seed] and taal ] palm so well matched like in Bangladesh. And that’s why people of our country love to lie and make taal out of teel. It’s a country of exaggeration. They just tell against corruption but by blood everybody loves lies and doing corruption. Moreover, our politics is such that it is widely told ‘politics is not the business of honest people’ in our country and it became the most undoubted proverb. So, who are wishing to see corruption free Bangladesh, they are simply living in fool’s paradise until the sytem is radically overhauled.
I don’t know much facts about Tariq but my best guess you guys are exaggerating about Tariq Zia out of your sub-conscious jealousy. Otherwise, why you folks, don’t talk about Arafat Zia’s business/corruption etc if any. But I’m so sure if he involves himself in politics and is given a mega position in BNP you will all on a sudden start to make up stories through your wild imagination and he will be the best substrate of all your reactions and write-ups.
I don’t say Tariq is ‘Doa Toolsi Pata’ but I’m very sure he is not an arrogant, he is not a gobet as you trying to protray him.

After a long time I just read a wonderful unbiased story about BD politics.
Now if someone brags about leader’s children having foreign education (better/worse?), it’s just totally shameless.
It just showed that they DO NOT have faith on the education system they control. Just like the trend of our ‘honorable’ leaders to fly abroad every now and then to perform health check up.

I just just read all the comments about Tareq Rahman, I asked many people about the coruption of Tareq in fact no one can answar me the question, again is any one here who can provide a real story of his coruption. As far I know he is doing some business and had some Industries. It is very importent to us to know about him as he is sapose to be one of the main politician of Bangladesh who will try to lead the biggest political party of Bangladesh. Be careful brothers!

There have been several reports in the media in the past about Tariq Zia’s corruptions. One of them is the outdoor Ad business as reported by The Daily Star can be found from this link: http://www.thedailystar.net/2005/11/20/d5112001011.htm
Remember, when someone engages in an illegal venture, that person tries best to cover it up. In Bangladesh, there are very few investigative reporting that exposes these type of people.
