According to news reports, Ensanul was arrested on Monday in Dhaka, Bangladesh, leaving his father and his new wife with no information about where he was. Within days, he was handed over to United States authorities and sent by plane to first Alaska and then New York, where he is now charged with one count of making a false statement to a federal officer. Although Bangladeshi authorities insist that Ensanul’s interdiction was lawful, that arrest and the subsequent transfer remain are clouded with legal and factual uncertainty. It is also unclear whether Ensanul was questioned by Bangladeshi authorities, by what agencies, and with what methods.

Federal prosecutors have hinted that Ensanul’s case is linked to another prosecution for “material support” to a terrorist organization now taking place in Atlanta, Georgia. Nevertheless, Ensanul is being charged with the relatively low-level offense of making a false statement to a federal law enforcement official during an airport screening. It remains to be seen whether more serious charges will be piled on, or whether the government will seek to move the case to Atlanta.
