Chief of banned extremist group arrested in Bangladesh

(Comtex Community Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)DHAKA, 1 March, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) — Bangladesh’s Islamic extremist group
Jamaatul Mujahidden Bangladesh (JMB) chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, blamed for strings of bomb blasts and suicide attacks that killed
28 people, was arrested Wednesday from northeastern Sylhet town, 344 km from Dhaka.

Nine members of his family, including his wife, sons, daughters
and grand sons and daughters were also arrested from the house
after a commando-style attack at the house, according to
television live broadcast of the security forces’ raid.

The chief of the banned JMB has been on the run since series of
bomb blasts across the country almost simultaneously, killing
three people and injuring 150 others on August 17, 2005.

The Bangladeshi government late last year announced a prize
money of 10 million taka (about 140,000 U.S. dollars) for his
arrest.
