Dec 12, ‘05: Bangladesh okays phone bugging to combat militancy
Is this what we need?
DHAKA (AFP) - The Bangladesh president has approved an ordinance that allows law enforcers to tap telephones, a measure set to aid the fight against Islamic militants.
Human rights groups, however, expressed concern the new law could pave the way for abuse by the state.“We are concerned that this law could be used indiscriminately by the government,” said Elina Khan, executive director of the Human Rights Implementation Organisation.
“It will be sheer infringement on one’s privacy and right to speech.”
The Ordinance has been termed a “Black Law”. See the Dec 13, ‘05 Daily Star Report.
Is there really no other way to address the existing problem without the infringement on the civic community’s right to privacy and free speech?
